Introduction
I came to photography through painting and collage. The balance and ambivalence between foreground and background, the pleasurable confusion between what is perceived as real and what is fantasy, and by extension, the exploration of identity. My work on the transgender community embodies many of these issues
I’ve found photographing, writing, and participating in the lives of people on the crossroads of gender identity to be a liberating experience. The people in these photographs embody the concept that anatomy, sexual orientation, and gender identity are separate components that influence but do not dictate who we are, how we relate to sexual partners or to ourselves. People whose bodies, partners, and identity expression vary, are not a small minority of sad, disturbed, degenerates as many tend to assume. They are the ones asking the important questions: What is the relationship between nature and nurture? What does “man” or “woman” mean? Is it possible to live without gender definition or in a state of gender fluidity? Finally, what is the essence of a human being?
